About University of Sumatera Utara :

Study Programs

USU has 14 faculties/schools namely Medicine, Law, Agriculture, Engineering, Dentistry, Economics, Cultural Sciences, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Social and Political Sciences, Public Health, Pharmacy, Psychology, Nursing, and a Postgraduate School. Total number of study programs is 135, consists of 19 doctoral degree programs, 32 masters’ degree programs, 18 specialist education, 5 professional education, 46 bachelor degree, and 15 diploma degree. The number of current students enrolled is more than 33,000 people, 1,000 of them are foreign students.

 

USU at a Glance

Since the beginning of its establishment, USU was prepared to be the center of higher education in the western part of Indonesia. When first founded in 1952, USU was in the form of a foundation, then altered into a state university status in 1957, and subsequently changed into PT-BHMN in 2003.

Other than faculties and school, the campus has also various facilities such as dormitories, sport centers, a guest house, cafeterias, shops, banks, and a post office. Graduation and other academic events held at the Auditorium and Student Center buildings. A campus teaching hospital located at Padang Bulan has been constructed since August 2009.

 

Health studies programs such as Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy are currently very attractive to foreign students, especially those from Malaysia. The study programs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and Faculty of Agriculture become the leading programs of various research activities and community services. Ethnomusicology study program has specifically studied various ethnic music and performances in Sumatra. Faculty of Law and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences have been involved intensively in the development of the legal and administrative arrangements. A water purification product – Ferro Filters – an invention of a lecturer from the Faculty of Engineering is in the process of obtaining a patent right, and has widely been used in various areas of Sumatra.

 

Quality assurance system management and development, which is supported with a high commitment from all line managers, are continuously performed and become the main agenda in the effort of producing best quality USU graduates.
