An Giang University was established by Decision No 241/1999/ QĐ-TTg, on December 30, 1999 by the Prime Minister and had its opening ceremony on September 9, 2000. Developed from the Former Education College of An Giang under the supervision of the MOET and the People’s Committee of An Giang Province, An Giang University is responsible for training students, carrying out research and applied science to meet the demands of socio-economic development of An Giang and the Mekong Delta.

In 2000 -2001, An Giang University celebrated the 1st course. From only 5 major courses initially, An Giang University now has 36 regular majors. Moreover, An Giang University also organizes some undergraduate courses and vocational courses (there are now 48 regular courses). From 2012, there were no more vocational training courses. In 2012, the rate of enrollment was 85.5%, which was the highest ever. It not only shows great potential of a young university but also proves that An Giang University is of a real demand in the Mekong Delta. Since 2005 – 2006, An Giang University has officially conducted undergraduate irregular courses and has 4 courses so far.

An Giang University was established in the rapid period of change that is the  21st century with the slogan “Study regularly and study more” based on the educational goal “Learn to understand, to apply, to get along with others and to be a good person”. An Giang University is a young university but has made great advances in its key major courses: Biotech, Foreign trade, Business administration, Food technology, Information Technology, English. In August 2004, the 1st course graduated. After nine courses, more than 8.800 students graduated from the University. Recently, students from An Giang University have been employed in different positions all over the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh city and other provinces, many of them having finished graduate courses and developed their professional skills.

The 2009-2010 year is the 10th anniversary of An Giang University. This is the 1st school year of applying the credit system into education, implementation of Quality Assessment and surveying feedbacks from the students about their lecturers. In this school year, the Education Practice School celebrated its 1st school year and the new campus (40 ha) with modern equipment was opened. In 2011-2012, An Giang University started graduate courses in cooperation with other Universities; An Giang University will soon have its own Postgraduate courses.

In order to meet the needs of education, the number and the quality of staff members and lecturers of An Giang University were developed significantly. From 190 staff with 40 MA and PhD degrees, An Giang University has 864 staff including 354 staff with graduate degree (62 senior lecturers). More than 100 staff are doing their postgraduate courses in Vietnam and oversea (approximately 25 staff finished their postgraduate courses each year). Recently, 55% of the staff are postgraduate degree holders.

An Giang University includes many political and social organizations. There are 29 party cells with 605 members. The Labor Union of An Giang University has 15 divisions. Moreover, there are more social organizations, such as: Youth Union, Student Union, Veterans Association, and Former Teachers Union. The contributions of these organizations have great effects on the development of An Giang University. Also, the impact of student movements contributes effectively to student ideology, emotional and social development and receives great financial support from many donors.

In recent years, An Giang University was granted more than 1 billion VND of scholarship funding for poor students who perform well in their studies. The university maintains good movements in culture, arts, and gymnastics – sports for years and achieves high rankings in regional and national level competitions. Moreover, An Giang University has implemented effective social activities for educational development. Dormitories have been built with finance from 7 districts and one private company with the capacity of 2,800 students in the new campus (more than 1,000 places are available now). An Giang University’s leaders always create favorable and encouraging conditions for staff, and students to promote democracy, and always take “collective interests” as a goal to strive to ensure equality.

Identifying the importance of international relations and cooperation with domestic and foreign units for training and capacity building for professional staff, faculty, investment and development infrastructure, in recent years the university strives to expand international relations, establish relationships, and has signed many memoranda of understanding with universities and foreign institutions in Asia, America, Australia, and Europe. On average, each year about eight foreign experts (volunteers) work for An Giang University. With these international partnerships, An Giang University has implemented many projects, research and development programs that enable more opportunities for staff to pursue study abroad for professional development and development of An Giang University. An Giang University has successfully overcome initial difficulties of capacity building with support from other institutions in the area and overseas.

Scientific research is one of the important tasks to improve the quality of education and training at An Giang University. At the beginning, An Giang University adopted a series of preferential policies for staff, faculty and students to encourage scientific research and technology transfer. Currently, An Giang University has completed 345 scientific research projects (293 projects at the university level), and actively participated in the planning of regional socio-economic development requested by a number of districts in the province and in neighboring provinces. Since 2004, more than 300 scientific research projects of undergraduate students’ graduation theses have been carried out annually.

The new campus has been in use after a short time of construction (27 months). This new campus was first used in March 2009. Since April 2010, the administrative building and the laboratory systems with modern-built-structure have been used to ensure basic training needs are met. This basically facilitates the implementation of the mission and goals of future development. Currently, An Giang University has two campuses of ​​48.4 ha (old campus – 8.9 ha, new campus – 39.5 ha). A new library has been formed as an electronic library with 1,200 networked computers. Private companies and society have been encouraged to invest money for the fitness and sports complex as well as more equipment for laboratories for advanced teaching and promoting the application of information technology in the new campus. Administrative staff and teaching staff have been standardized so that their professional qualifications satisfy the requirements of staff at university level. Enhancing the implementation of an innovative curriculum, improving methods of teaching-learning, promoting innovative management systems, diversifying forms of training, strengthening quality assurance, maintaining the quality of ISO 9001: 2008 management system, and focusing on using the “5S” programs are significant strategies that An Giang University  focuses on to ensure the commitment to training quality.

Currently, An Giang University is striving to strengthen its organizational structure, and staffing after separating the campus at Chau Phu which will become the An Giang Engineering and Economics College. In addition An Giang University is working hard to establish a Medical School within its control.

Integrating with the general trend of development of other universities across the country, An Giang University constantly strengthens and expands partnerships within and outside the country to promote scientific research and technology transfer. An Giang University will be a reliable destination of education and training for students to meet the needs of socio-economic development of An Giang province and neighboring provinces.
