ISTORY OF UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS – THE UNIVERSITY OF DANANG

University of Economics – The University of Danang was founded in July 1975 – formerly the Department of Economics of the University of Da Nang, initially Danang University of Technology. In 1985, the Department of Economics became Da Nang College of Economics, a division of the Ministry of Education and Training. In 1988, the Department was merged with Danang University of Technology, thus becoming one of the two faculties of the University of Da Nang. On the Fourth of April in 1994, along with the University of Danang, the College of Economics and Business Administration was established by the Government Decree No 32/CP. Since 2004, the College has been officially renamed Da Nang University of Economics.

In early days, the University had only one faculty with less than twenty staffs and two academics, annually admitting about one hundred students. Forty years of the vigorous development saw the University transforming into an interdisciplinary post-secondary educational institution. Furthermore, the University has become a leading research center of business management consultancy and economic knowledge transfer in the Central region, the Central Highlands and the whole nation.

The University has twelve faculties, eight administrative departments, seven educational centers, one library and one affiliated department with over 380 staffs and lecturers, including three professors, sixteen associate professors, forty-eight doctorates, 162 masters, three senior lecturers, three elite teachers, sixty-five current lecturers and fifty lecturers studying abroad as research affiliates and graduate students. The percentage of lecturers with master’s degrees or higher is over 90%, and they are mainly foreign-trained.

The University has twenty-seven undergraduate academics, including seven high-quality educational programs, six master’s, and five doctoral programs.

Currently, the University enrolls over 2,000 full-time undergraduate students, 1,000 part-time students, over 600 graduate students and dozens of research affiliates. Moreover, the University has the international post-secondary programs cooperating with the internationally prestigious universities such as Towson University, University of Keuka (USA), University of Sunderland, University of Stirling (UK), and Guangxi Nationalities Institute (China) with an annual admission of 200 students. Presently, the total number of undergraduate students, graduate students and research affiliates is more than 12,000 individuals.

During the last 40 years, more than 50,000 bachelor graduates, thousands of master graduates and doctorates in economics have graduated from the University. The talents have been employed nationwide, including a large number of successful businessmen and high-ranking officials, holding significant responsibilities in many organizations in the Central region, the Central Highlands, and the whole nation.

Besides the excellence of education, scientific research, and technology transfer; the University highly committed to international cooperation to become a prestigious research institute. The University continuously improves and expands research activities, economic knowledge transfer, and business management consultancy. Therefore, the University has been a trustworthy destination for addressing business management issues of corporations and local governments in the territory.

Further promoting scientific research, the University has proactively established and nurtured cooperative relations with major universities and institutes such as National Economics University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, the Academy of Finance, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Public Administration, Vietnam Asia-Pacific Economic Center (VAPEC)… Especially, in addition to the traditional relationships with international partners such as The Association of Francophone Universities (AFU), Lille Management Institute, University of Marne-la-Vallée, the Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), University of Quebec (Canada), University of California (USA)… the University has expanded the international cooperation with many universities in Japan, Australia, UK, USA, Netherlands, Finland, Thailand, etc. through scientific conferences, exchange programs of students and lecturers, and other diversified activities. Consequently, Da Nang University of Economics – the University of Da Nang has initiated the international expansion strategy.

Thanks to the contribution to the regional and national development in the past 40 years, the University received such honor awards from The President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam as Third-class Labor Order in 2001, Second-class Labor Order in 2005 as well as many merit and flag awards of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Education and Training of the provinces and cities directly under the Central Government in the Central region, the Highlands and the whole nation. The sociopolitical organizations of the University such as Communist Party Representation, Labor Union, Vietnam Youth Federation, Veterans Association and Students’ Association are transparent, robust and proactive societies that received many prestigious awards from the Party, the State and senior management.
