Oasis International Schools is currently in the process of establishing a new international school in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Malaysia, which we plan to call the Oasis International School (OIS–KL). Although Oasis had considered starting a school in KL in the mid-1990s, a recent opportunity has revived our effort. Our goal is to open with a purpose built campus in the fall of 2017, per the Malaysian Ministry of Education regulations. Our team in Kuala Lumpur is currently seeking to locate suitable investors to partner in building a one-of-a-kind purpose build campus to house Oasis International School.
The city of KL is ripe for an Oasis school for many reasons. KL is considered a global city with various ethnic groups, religions, and industries. Moreover, Malaysia has a combined population of nearly 30 million people. Because of its central location, between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, Malaysia has traditionally been a trading port and a crossroad for travelers from both the East and West. As a result, Malaysia has become a multicultural hub consisting of Malay, Chinese, Indian, indigenous peoples and numerous international workers fromaround the world. Oasis believes that opening a school in this country would provide a great opportunity to positively serve children from many nations, meet the educational needs of foreign workers in Malaysia, and help draw international business people into the country.
Furthermore, KL is the epicenter of the international community in Malaysia, which makes it the perfect location for an Oasis School. KL is filled with expatriates and there is a growing demand for quality international education to accommodate foreign direct investment. One website states that, “Malaysia is currently the world’s 11th most preferred study destination. According to UNESCO, ‘Malaysia has captured a 2% market share of international students in the fast-growing private education sector’. Moreover, the government recognizes the need to expand international education within Malaysia, and they desire to grant more international school permits in an effort to meet this demand. Therefore, the leadership of Oasis feels that the timing is excellent for the establishment of a new school in KL.
