Overview
The Deputy Head of Secondary – Student Welfare (MYP) is a member of the Secondary Leadership Team (SLT) with responsibility for the welfare of secondary students in Years 7-11, supporting the Head of Secondary in the day-to-day running of the school.
Role-Specific Tasks
Connected People
- Assist the Head of Secondary in promoting a positive school culture focused on student learning and professional growth
- Ensure that the welfare needs of the year 7-11 students are met and that teachers and year level coordinators are supported in their work with families
- Liaise with the substitution coordinator to ensure that classes are effectively covered
- Assume a shared role in deputising for the Head of Secondary during absences
- Contributing to secondary and whole school student welfare initiatives
- Supporting and motivating teachers
- Communicate with parents to improve their understanding of the student welfare programme through parent education sessions, blogs and other communication systems
- Work closely with the year level and subject leaders teams to develop mutual support for the horizontal and vertical aspects of the programme in relations to student welfare
- Work closely with the middle school and high school counsellors
- Be a member of the student support team
Connected Practices
- Work in collaboration with year 6 and year 7 coordinators to develop a transition programme to support students as they move into the secondary school
- Lead the annual class placement process
- Oversee the new student and family orientation programme
- Develop the duty roster in collaboration with the Deputy Head of Elementary Student Welfare
- Support the year level coordinators and counselors to ensure a common approach to student welfare
- Ensure the community is educated in positive behavior management approaches
- Develop behaviour management plans in collaboration with teachers, parents and students as required
- Oversee supervision duties for effectiveness and consistency
- Complete classroom walkthroughs to collect data to contribute to teacher professional growth meetings
- Lead professional growth meetings for teachers in collaboration with the Secondary Leadership Team
- Oversee student records to ensure they are kept up to date on the school database
Connected Programmes
- Contribute to the organization of secondary school and whole school events
- Liaise with NIPTA (parent association) in the coordination of parent-led events
- Coordinate student transportation in consultation with the external provider
- Collaborating closely with the pastoral leaders of the IB PYP and DP to ensure an effective continuum of support
- Liaising with relevant colleagues to ensure an effective transition of students from PYP to MYP
