The History of International School Bangkok: Charting a Path to Excellence
International School Bangkok (ISB) had its humble beginnings in 1951 as the International Children’s Center on the grounds of the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. It was the first international school in Thailand, catering to the educational needs of U.S. Embassy families and other expatriates in the city.
As the population of expatriate children in Bangkok continued to grow, ISB soon outgrew its original location and moved to a larger campus on Sukhumvit Soi 15 in 1960. With enrollment reaching an all-time high during the peak of the Vietnam War, a second campus was opened in Bangsue to accommodate the growth.
In the 1980s, the ISB Board of Trustees had a vision to create a world-class school in the region, leading to the move to the present-day location in Nichada Thani in 1992. This US$25-million campus boasts some of the best facilities in the region and solidified ISB’s position as a leading international school.
In 2018, ISB expanded its reach with the opening of its Environmental Wilderness Campus in Petchaburi Province. To this day, ISB remains a nonprofit, independent, and nonsectarian school, governed by its parents who are members of the school association and serve on the Board of Trustees.
