Background
The Language Institute, Chiang Mai University is an autonomous organization under supervision of the university. It was decided that the main role of the Language Institute, CMU would be the development of foreign language, learning potentials , and the overall communicative skill of its student and the wider community. The Language Institute, CMU was officially established on September 3rd, 2003 according to the regulation of Chiang Mai University regarding the Language Institute, Chiang Mai University announcement (2003). The Language Institute, Chiang Mai University is an autonomous organization under the supervision of the university. The regulations of the Language Institute, Chiang Mai University are as follows.

The Language Institute operates according to the regulation of Chiang Mai University regarding the Language Institute, Chiang Mai University announcement (2nd Issue, 2005), the rules of Chiang Mai University regarding the establishment of institutes under the supervision of Chiang Mai University announcement (2005), and Chiang Mai University policy regarding the administration under the supervision of Chiang Mai University announcement dated on September 23, 2005.
The Language Institute is an academic institute under the supervision of Chiang Mai University. The 3 regulations issued in 2004 as mentioned above was cancelled and the regulation of Chiang Mai University regarding the administration of academic institutes under the supervision of Chiang Mai University (2008).
Vision
The Language Institute, Chiang Mai University is a learning center dedicated to excellence in the teaching of foreign language skills for the students and staff of Chiang Mai University, for the public and private sectors, and for the general community in the Northern part of Thailand.
Objective
The Language Institute was determined to develop the learning potential and language skills with an independence and flexibility in administration.
Mission
To assist and develop the learning potentials and communicative skills required in the academic and general use of foreign languages for Chiang Mai University’s students and staff and the wider community
To enhance knowledge and understanding of a variety of foreign cultures
To produce high quality foreign language learning materials
To arrange foreign language tests
To establish a network of collaboration amongst language institutions throughout the kingdom of Thailand and abroad to promote the exchange of ideas, language, and culture
To preserve and protect religion, culture, and environment

It is the policy of the Language Institute, CMU to develop foreign languages, learning potentials, and the overall communicative skills of its students and staff and the wider community. This includes those from the government and private sectors, as well as the public throughout the north of Thailand.
