About Plengprasiddhi Sailom Kindergarten (PSK):
Plengprasiddhi Sailom Kindergarten (PSK) PIEP offers English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses, from Nursery to Kindergarten 3, with a curriculum designed to create a foundation in the English skills needed for a successful transition to Primary 1 in bilingual, English and international schools. The following are the expected students’ learning outcomes after the program:
• Students will be able to communicate in English by using basic sentence structures.
• Students will gain vocabulary and useful expressions that are linked to the topics they study in the Thai program.
• Students will be able to comprehend basic spoken and written English.
• Students will be able to recognize, form, pronounce, and blend the letter sounds.
The PIEP includes the following English courses within each academic year:
• Plengprasiddhi English
• Extra English (Optional)
• English Summer Camps (Optional)
Plengprasiddhi English
Plengprasiddhi English is an integral part of the Plengprasiddhi Kindergarten curriculum and covers the four, basic English skills; reading, writing, speaking and listening. In order to cover these four skills effectively, we have split the program between our English teachers, with each teacher focusing on teaching a different aspect of English:
Conversation (Topic-based EFL)
This section of our English program is aimed at developing the students’ spoken English, as well as improving their listening comprehension. Here we will learn a range of basic English dialogues, a wide range of useful vocabulary, and will be encouraging the use of English as a way of communicating with the people around us.
While the general topics are the same for all age groups, the quantity and complexity of the English in each age group will vary dramatically. The focus in nursery, for example, will be less about language production and more about listening comprehension. At the other end of the scale, kindergarten 3 will be introduced to more complex, abstract vocabulary and dialogues, as well as being shown some basic, grammatical rules.
Classroom activities encourage students’ speech and language development.
Reading and Writing (Story-based EFL)
PIEP also promotes English learning through meaningful context. Students learn new vocabulary and phrases through leveled reading books. Students learn the meaning of words by relating to the story, with the aid of pictures and gestures. Sentence structure and grammar are demonstrated by repetition of key phrases through books and stories. Class participation encourages students to engage one-to-one with the teacher to practice words and phrases, at the same time as giving them the opportunity to use these words and phrases to interact with each other.
Phonics
The phonics program aims to develop the fundamental skills necessary to further improve their English reading and writing. Class activities focus on letters and their sound and students will learn how to recognize, pronounce and form letters as well as how to blend sounds to produce words.
All lessons are designed specifically to meet the different learning styles of different students. They will learn through multi-sensory activities, with visual, audio and kinesthetic materials being used regularly.
English Summer Camps
During the school holidays, in March and October, Plengprasiddhi Kindergarten offers an optional English camp, providing a completely bilingual environment for the full duration of the holidays. The content of the camps are based around some of the most popular pieces of children’s literature and through this we hope to nurture a love of reading and of stories.
Students in this program will be fully immersed in English, studying a wide range of subjects. Science, maths, arts & crafts, storytelling, cookery and music are just a few of the subjects that will be taught.
Extra English
In addition to our regular English program, Plengprasiddhi Kindergarten offers an optional, supplementary program to further develop our students’ English skills. The focus of the program will be a mix of conversational English and phonics practice and we will be introducing a range of new vocabulary items, as well as new sentence structures. We have developed a syllabus which is designed to both review important language points at the same time as demonstrating new ideas. As with the regular program, our Extra English teacher uses modern teaching methodologies, as well as using a range of multi-sensory teaching aids in order to keep the students’ interested and engaged.
